A few weeks ago I wrote about time management and offered a recorded meditation about “being in the now”. In a nutshell, I explained how grounding oneself in the present moment consists of being mindful of external stimuli coming in through our physical, visual and auditory channels.

Several readers asked about where hypnosis fits in to this model, and its relationship to mindfulness. This is an excellent question. Understanding this tripartite nature of awareness – ie. the physical, visual and auditory channel – gives one a means of exploring not just mindfulness but several different related states, including hypnosis.
To have an experience of what I’m describing, you need to actually DO the following exercise, not just read about it. First, find a place where you’re not likely to be disturbed. With your eyes open but droopy, look around and note out loud three things you can see.
Then do the same with three things you can hear, followed by three that you can feel.
Repeat these steps but, in the next round, comment only on two sights, sounds or sensations, followed by one sight, sound or sensation.
Close your eyes, and imagine a new or old sight. This time, note it silently. Then, note one sound that you are either imaging or remembering, followed by one sensation.
In order to build up more of an internal, multi-sensory experience, now imagine two sights, sounds and feelings, followed by three sights, sounds and feelings.
As much as possible, allow your mind to drift into these imaginings in a similar way to how one ‘floats off’ right before sleep. In fact, this is an excellent way to fall to sleep if you have trouble in that area.
Before you begin, decide what, if any, positive suggestions you are going to give yourself while in self-hypnosis.
Decide as well how long you wish to stay in this state. At first you may want to set a quiet alarm, but, with practice, you’re internal clock will bring you out.
In order to help you experience this incredibly relaxing state, I’ve recorded an mp3 to guide you.
